Chapter 15

Of Death and Life

The Byron Dig was a scientific research project. It was also the story of a large number of men and women coming together, over a long period of time, to contribute to this effort. It was, in a sense, a microcosm of life, with many opportunities to experience, directly or vicariously, the good and the bad that fell to each other’s lot.

Through the twenty-nine years it lasted, I watched people I’d met as children grow into adults and have kids of their own. A few of our volunteers went on to gain professional standing that led to employment in prominent scientific and educational institutions. At the same time, too many people whom I’d gotten to know, and for whom I’d developed strong feelings, passed from this life. I offer here two stories, of death and of life, from this period of the Dig.
